20 Years On: Remembering the Great Miners’ Strike of 1984-85

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the Miners' Strike of 1984-85. The struggle remains the most significant post-war industrial dispute. During the strike, coal miners and their families saw their world changed and caught a glimpse, in their communities, of how different society could be organised - not for profit but for the common good. The period since the end of the strike has seen profound global and local changes. The coal industry has been virtually destroyed and today the coalfields of South Wales remain marginalized places, uncertain whether they are caught in a period of transformation, or just trapped on the long road of decline.

To mark the occasion, a social event will be held at Blackwood Miners Institute, on Friday May 21st, 2004. The aim of the evening is to draw attention, through a diverse range of entertainment and personal recollections, to the challenges posed to communities, and to the men and women who were involved in the struggle. The event will also celebrate the contribution of coal miners, their families and their trade union to both British culture and communities.

Martyn will be taking part in this event.
Tickets for the evening are now on sale from the Box Office at Blackwood Miners Institute:
